Ever heard of guyalage before? It's the new balayage for men! This post will explain how I "guyalaged" my client Dallas's hair with a fun twist of purple on the ends.
Dallas had come in previously for a low balayage about three to four months ago and was scheduled to come in for a "more blond look". When he came in his ends were really brittle and tangled like you wouldn't believe ya'll! He said he wanted an all over blond look, I am talking about bleach on the scalp blond. I discouraged him against that because I rarely put bleach on the scalp just because I am more fond of dimension in the hair and I care about the integrity of the hair. Because Dallas was super tinder headed, and his bleach hair was super tangly, I advised him against bleaching his whole head because he would be in so much pain trying to untangle his blond locks. Thankfully, Dallas took my advice and we decided on heavy babylights.

As you can see in the picture above, his ends are super dry and needed a moisture treatment ASAP. After brushing out Dallas's hair I sprayed it down with defy damage spray as a primer before I applied lightener to his hair. Dallas was already a natural level 8, so it was no trouble lifting him to a level 10+. This was an all over highlight and it took about 3 hours from start to finish with a haircut and style. I sectioned out his hair into four quadrants with his hair parted down the middle.

For my formula I used Goldwell Silklift strong formula powder with 20volume for his roots and midshaft, and 5volume for his ends that had been previously lightened. When I finished the back two quadrants I moved onto his from two quadrants, focusing on thin slices around his face for the maximum blond look. I soaked the hair left out of the foils in It's A 10 Leave in Conditioner spray, just to give it some moisture while we let the back process. After foiling the front two quadrants it was time for me to pull the foils from the back, then I waited about 15minutes for the front sections to process without heat before I pulled them too.

In the shampoo bowl I toned his hair with Redken Shades EQ 09V, 09P and 09V which I left on for about 5 minutes to get rid of any brassy tones and to clean the canvas for his purple. After a much needed trim and conditioning treatment, I did a rough blowdry on his hair before I moved onto applying his purple Joico Intensity color 'Amethyst'.

I applied the purple on a balayage board to make sure I completely saturated his ends and to give it a nice blended look into his blond. For the underneath sections I dragged the purple up pretty close to his roots and as I moved higher up I tapered off a little to give a natural effect and to not make it look like he dipped his ends in Koolaid. I let the color sit for 25 minutes without heat before I washed his hair in a cool rinse and a little conditioner. And yes he let me curl it but we put it up in a bun before he left haha. This is the finished look!
